Worries Aside...

Thought for the day:
"We should give meaning to life, not wait for life to give us meaning.." - author unknown

As I was grilling dinner tonight, I had a little audience. Mr. Grumps was enjoying the evening with a glass of wine, and his faithful friend was at his side, waiting for an ear scratch. I love nights like this; no schedules, no plans, just in for the night. I also love this crazy dog with all my heart. She is almost 15, and pretty much runs the house. She is also my "taste tester", and there's nothing I've made that she doesn't like. Makes me feel pretty talented.

After a slightly stressful week, I treated myself to a trip to the garden store. It's newly built, and I love just roaming around, smelling, poking and reading those little plastic stakes sticking out of each plant that tell you everything you need to know.

I bought a few packs of vegetables and herbs for container gardening on my deck. I was very happy to bring home a little 6-pack of basil. Even though it's small, I will probably have enough basil by summer's end to share with the neighborhood.

Most of the summer recipes I will be posting call for fresh herbs and seasonings, so get a large pot, and plant all in one: basil, mint, parsley and rosemary. You won't regret it.

The herb garden sounds good. Can you give more details on what would be good to plant. How big a pot do I need?

I usually use a 12-inch pot to fit about 4-6 herbs (use "Moisture Control" soil mix if you can get it). They grow fast, so try not to crowd them together.
I'm always able to find "homes" for the little plants I don't use from the 6-packs. I like to give little pots of basil as gifts, along with pasta and a bottle of wine. Makes a nice housewarming gift, or just a simple "thanks!"
